Former All-American Fencing Academy Sabre Coach Take Gold for Poland

Ola SochaAlexandra Socha, former All-American Fencing Academy sabre coach won the Havana World Cup in Women’s Sabre on June 5, 2010.

According to Fencing.net, Socha barely thwarted an all-USA final by knocking out Dagmara Wozniak (USA) 15-14 in her semi-final bout.

Emily Jacobson (USA) defeated 2 time Olympic gold medalist Mariel Zagunis (USA) 15-11 in the semi-finals before falling to Alexandra Socha 15-11.

This is Socha’s third time to medal at the Havana World Cup and her 7th World Cup gold medal.
 
End of Season Champions

End of Season 2010 TournamentIn the end of season championship tournament at the All-American Fencing Academy, Fayetteville’s youth fencers gathered for Fayetteville’s largest youth tournament.  The Fayetteville Area End of Season Championship capped a great year of fencing for the area’s youth fencers.

All of Fayetteville’s fencing clubs, including All-American Fencing Academy, Fayetteville Academy, Village Christian Academy, Flaming Sword Academy and Home School Fencers were invited attend.  An additional invitee from Apex Fencing Club also joined the tournament.

All youth fencers fenced together in one youth tournament.  Awards were given to individual age groups as well as an overall winner.

In the age 7-9 age group, Benjamin Metzger took first, Gabriel Guevarra took second, and Caroline Berger and Douglas Kelly tied for third.

In the age 10-11 age group, Ronnie Britton took first, Faiz Nazir took second, and Baker White and Jeb Berger tied for third.

In the age 12-13 age group, John Murray took first, Brandon Ahlmark (Apex Fencing Club) took second and Jack Santini took third.

Overall tournament winners were John Murray (first), Brandon Ahlmark (second), and Faiz Nazir and Ronnie Britton (tied for third).
 
Ines Page: Librarian by Day, Swashbuckler by Night

Ines PageIt sounds like it should be a movie.  It has the makings of a summer blockbuster; mild mannered librarian reading stories to kids during the day, wielding a sword and having duels in the evening.

This is the life of Fayetteville's Ines Page. Ines has been with the Cumberland County Public Library system for more than 10 years.  She is originally from El Salvador before she moved to Fayetteville with her husband, John Page.  

"I was in the United States for only a short time and I didn't speak English very well.  I thought no one would hire me for a full time position so I started out as a volunteer."

At the time, she worked in the Circulation Department and was later hired full time, but she always wanted to work with children.  When an opportunity opened to work in the children's department at the Cliffdale Branch, Ines took it and later transferred back to Headquarters Library.

The All-American Fencing Academy is hosting a Sabre Camp with Matt Cox. Registration is $50. 9AM-1PM.  This camp is for low to mid-level fencers.  This camp is not intended for fencers who do now have any sabre experience.

Matt Cox is a coach with the Mid-South Fencers Club and is a several time champion of the Pacific Northwest Sectional Championship, the Oregon State Games and North Carolina Divisional Sabre Championship.

His fencers has students have won several USFA state championships and national medals.

This camp is being held at the All-American Fencing Academy on Saturday, June 12, 2010, Downtown Fayetteville (207 B Donaldson St., Fayetteville, NC).
