results, tournament announcements

Whew! We completed our first tournament with youth since the start of the pandemic nearly a year ago! And we held a largish teen/adult tournament! We had some great results!

You can see the complete results with pool results and direct elimination results online here: https://askfred.net/Results/results.php?tournament_id=47467&highlight_competitor_id=&event_id=185526

We had 8 youth fencers over the weekend! Congrats first to Atticus Conlin, Max Greene, Callaghan Young, and Rory Jones! Atticius placed 1st, Max placed 2nd, and Callaghan and Rory tied for 3rd. With the exception of Callaghan, this was everyone’s first tournament!

“I was happy to see that all the youth fencers were able to put up a win over the weekend. That’s a tough accomplishment!” says Coach Gerhard Guevarra.

In the pools, Rory finished with 3 wins, Callaghan finished with 4 wins, Max finished with 5 wins, and Atticus finished in the first seed undefeated with 7 wins. He had a very close bout with Callaghan squeezing through with a 5-4 victory.

In the elimination rounds, Atticus seeded 1st, Max seeded 2nd, Callaghan seeded 3rd, and Rory seeded 4th. All 4 made it past the 1st round and into the semi-finals. Max was able to top Callaghan with a 10-3 victory, Atticus had a close bout with Rory winning 10-9. Atticus went on to defeat Max in the finals 10-1.

In the teen and adult tournament, there were 12 fencers with Holden taking 1st, Michael Doherty taking 2nd, and Zion Facey and Colton Culliton tying for third. In the pools, Michael and Andrew Wiggs went undefeated putting Andrew in 1st seed and Michael in 2nd. However, in the second round, 8th seed Zion Facey upset Andrew, and 5th seed Holden Moorefield upset 4th seed Isabelle Guevarra.

In the semi-finals Holden defeated Zion and Michael defeated Colton Culliton setting up a finals between Holden and Michael. In the finals, Michael started off with an early lead, but Holden was able to catch up and keep the bout close. The bout came to a 14-14 tie. The final touch started with Michael, however, his attack missed the target as Holden counter-attack scored him the winning touch.

Holden Moorefield is part of a team of competitive fencers in their senior year fencers at the All-American Fencing Academy. This is Holden’s first big tournament victory.

“Holden’s fencing game has improved in the last year, and we were really hoping that US Fencing sanctioned events would continue this spring and summer to give him an opportunity to earn a national rating.” noted Coach Gerhard Guevarra. “Our high school senior fencers have really set a standard for our competitive team this year.”
